The story of this plant was... Last 2009, I bought this plant at dawn from the flea market in Manila where locals sold their local products (handy crafts, furnitures, plants, fruits and vegetables, etc.). The vendor introduced this plant to me as he was saying it is a Vanda luzonica. That moment made me surprised as I'm about to bought the entire clump worth 3 USD without any competition from others who are also craving for this Philippine endangered and rare orchid species. I didn't hesitate to bought them because most of Vanda luzonica worth 35 USD per piece in one of the local orchid growers.

When I got my vacation leave from my work, I bought all my plants from Manila to Cagayan de Oro then to Bukidnon. I put each name tags so I would not missed their identity. For a year, the clump finally blooms but it bears the flower of Vanda ustii, I was sad about it. I realized that I was tricked by the vendor who mistakenly identified and I should be more cautious again in buying.

One of my friends in Manila told me on how to identify a Vanda luzonica from Vanda ustii. He told me that Vanda luzonica strap leaf ends with J-shape while Vanda ustii strap leaf ends with V-shape. And also the texture of the leaves of Vanda luzonica is more thicker than Vanda ustii. I just learned lessons for identifying the plant.

At home, I have my Philippine Vanda species collections: Vanda javierae, Vanda lamellata, Vanda luzonica, Vanda merrillii, Vanda roeblingiana, Vanda sanderiana, Vanda scandens, and Vanda ustii. My next Philippine Vanda species targets are: Vanda limbata and Vanda helvola, which they are also found in Mindanao island.

Nice of your aunt to take pics of your orchids when you can't be there. Unfortunate that it wasn't what you wanted, but a nice flower anyway.
