You're doing great with it - and you'll be a whiz after a couple of photography classes! Did the comment on white balance make sense to you?

I've waited for the right light all day to try and get the darn thing to look right. Might be a tad bluer...but is now pretty much spot on.

Very nice blue. Love the color and shape of the flower. Is it fragrant?? Ditto to Naoki!

I know how hard it is to capture the colours between red and blue - it seems particularly difficult on a digital camera. I saw that you posted at 12:44 - I forget - is that East Coast Time, Central time, or GMT? Was it sunny in FL today? Late afternoon sun makes for beautiful atmospheric photos, but not always the most accurate color. Midday sun tends to be harsh and wash out the color. I actually find that a brightish cloudy day gives me the most accurate photos - which is what I had at the Conservatory today (yucky day - drizzling, etc, but great inside for photos). But, as everyone knows, no one can either predict or change he weather, so we just roll with the punches.

This shot is really pretty, although, at least on my monitor, it shows a lot more red tones than I would have expected from your earlier version. Countless possible reasons for that, including the fact that monitors differ tremendously in how they process color. I'd encourage you to shoot it again against a darker background and in diffused natural light - it's such a beautiful plant and i know you're working so hard to get comfortable with your camera. I've only had my D80 for 8 months, but I still run up against brick walls of confusion with it. I think my past experience working with an entirely manual 35mm helps me to have a sense of what I'm trying for - but who knows....

    Great work - keep trying!

Very niced shot of the second spike. The colour and the tessellations are rendered so beautifully.

A bit of a throwback I think in the genetics. Most usually this hybrid is of pink or red colouration and much more closed circular shape - the sanderiana influences overcoming the coerulea. This time coerulea has prevailed in colour and a little bit in shape too.
