This is a large fragrant semi-alba with 6" flowers. The flower stems were taller last year. I don't know why that is.

Really beautiful - it looks as though you've managed to capture both the magenta lines as well as the velvet-crimson on the lips - I find that difficult to do. Nice job!

I have a new set-up. I bought two studio lights with 500 watt bulbs and opaque white umbrellas that the lights shine through to soften the shadows. I put one on each side. I didn't have a lot of time to experiment but it looks like it may work out better than the flash. The color definately looks truer than what I get with a flash.

Funny - I just got a new set-up for Christmas, too - 3 studio lights with 80/400 watt bulbs each (2 on side and one above on a boom) and a 36" lightbox tent with different backdrops. I've just taken a few photos with it so far, and even though it sets up relatively quickly, it takes up a lot of space when I use it, so I'm still going back and forth between my "studio" and my usual mishmash of lights and backgrounds. I've never liked the results I get with a flash, even when I can't get what I want otherwise (just ornery, I guess). I'm working with a Nikon D80 and an 18-200mm VR DX lens - no macro work yet. I'm not sure what I think about this tent - what are you using for a background?

Wow! That sounds like an elaborate lighting system. Congratulations. I don't really have much for a background. I just use a black foam board right now but I would like some kind of fabric sweep. Don't be in too much of a hurry when it comes to a macro lens. I bought one that I seldom use because the depth of field is so short that only half the flower is in focus. I lucked out when I bought my Nikor 35 mm 1.8 lens. It focuses down to 12 inches and it turned out to be perfect for photographing flowers. My camera is a Nikon 3100 with a different format than yours. My 35 mm lens is equivilant to about a 50 mm on yours.
