Smile Perreiraara Motes Leprechaun 'Haiku Mint'

This is a mini vanda I mounted onto wood. I had 5 buds at first, but for some reason a few didn't make it. Maybe it will bloom better next time. I didn't even post it when I first got it as it only had one flower...at least two of them made it this time.

Connie, you and I have a good taste. Along with V. lamellata, I have one of them, too. It is one of the very first Vandaceous plants I got as I decided to grow Vandas.

You do not find it often, but it is a keeper once you get it. It's frangrant, too.

I love the green and violet contrast on the bloom. Just wondering, do you have it mounted with any kind of media - sphagnum, tree fern, etc. - and how do you keep it from drying out too much - does it take a lot of misting?

When I mounted them I grabbed some twine and that's about it. I tied them down where there was new root growth and in the middle and sat them in my misting area. The misters at that time were turned on 2 or 3 times a day. I sit them where they get nearly full sun, with afternoon protection from the hottest sun. When I felt they had enough new roots attached to the log I cut the twine off and lost my name tags. lol Ahem.... I've also done this with a couple Encyclia hybrids. I have what I think is Bc. Jiminy Cricket, the roots were completely rotted off and it was infested with scale. I mounted it on a log...said a prayer for the poor thing and threw it on a bottom rack in the misting area. Poof, bugs disappeared, roots appeared. I of course sprayed and treated it...but it was in bad shape back then. It now has roots wrapping the mount and it's in spike...boo yah! There is something about orchids on a stick too...they just look happier. Spagnum seems to slow down the plant from rooting for me, I quit using it on my mounts awhile back.

Neat bloom and mount. I agree about forgetting the moss. I have found the less medium the better even in pots. It is more natural that way.

Oh, such a cute orchid bloom! How small is this vanda? Scale in the photo is always hard to judge.

    cheers,

I measured my "mini" vandas, that I could get to. The Perreiraara has a 12 inch leaf span, while the Neostylis tops out at 10 inches. My Vanda Lamellata is 14 inches. I think what I like the best about the mini's is the way their leaves curl downward....they are so graceful. It makes for a beautiful plant in or out of bloom.
