Default Cattleya C. G. Roebling 'Sentinel'

Somehow, I forgot to post these when the orchid was in bloom - about 2-3 weeks ago. It was actually starting to age when these photos were taken, so forgive any brownish marks - it's not the plant's fault.

This is actually a simple cross - (C. gaskelliana x C. purpurata), and was registered in 1895; I'm a little surprised that it hasn't taken more awards (8, according to OWiz), but the shape could be flatter and rounder; otherwise, the coloring is really pretty and clean.

I attended the Judging sessions of the AOS, the TOGA, OSSEA at the 20th WOC. In that it was always mentioned that it will be difficult for the same cross to get an award, because it has to be better or atleast as good as the previously rewarded one. Only an award of cultural merit can be given otherwise. The reason this one has not had more rewards is that the first award given in 1980s was already a HCC with 75 points, so the standards were already set high.

Thanks, Amey. I wouldn't have taken this one to judging anyway, because it only had two blooms, and I had neglected to ensure they opened without interfering with one another. I do think the quality of the color and size of the bloom could compete with an HCC if 1) it blooms as well next time, and 2) it puts out more blooms at a time. Looking at OWiz, most of the C.G. Roeblings, even 'Sentinel', seem rather more pinkish, and this one is truly a kind of cornflower blue. All hypothetical, anyway. I love going to judging sessions - especially when I don't have a plant on the line. I find it fascinating and the judges here in Atlanta are always happy to explain why a particular orchid did or didn't get an award. I know that floriferousness and shape are very important - and by shape, they mean round and flat - but there are so many other subtleties, it's always hard to tell what will catch their eye. I've heard that a big part of it -not included in the Official Judging Handbook - is the WOW factor.

Beyond doubt your flowers are beautiful, my comments were just to clarify why this particular cross had less no. of awards which you mentioned in your earlier post.
