Hi John - I'm just putting all mine (nearly) in S/H and wondered how yours were doing and how long it took them to transition.

When I first started,(2009), I had read a college study that showed that contrary to popular belief, Orchids grew and flowered better if their roots were in constant contact with water. So, when I started aquiring plants, I put everything in SH. (I lost a few). Now, I transfer them after they flower, and have better success. I have quite a few in compots,(from flasks), that stay in sphag. until they are larger, then I put them in SH. I water them weekly, and feed them bi-weekly,(1 tsp. "grow", and 4 to 6 drops Super Thrive per gal).

Thank you so much, John. It's really good to hear a success story right now. Any commonalities among the ones you lost?

    (Apologies for the temporary hijack.)

I needed to wash the roots as part of a programme getting rid of some scale ( Bois duVal - I believe is the name)which had become resistant to the chemicals i was using ,so a repot was necessary anyway. Also I grow the catts on the benches, and have an upper layer of hanging plants ( mostly vandaceous) which are sprayed regularly - even twice a day . Conventional composts get too wet from the falling mist , but I thought that using Hydroleca they would not be too wet - I have grown this way in the past, but not for some 7 or 8 years now. Time will tell, but first signs are good.

Orange is probably my favorite colour in orchid flowers.
