The Cattleya house is the largest of the orchid houses at Longwood Gardens. It is kept at 50 degrees to 65 degrees in the winter and up to 84 degrees in the summer. It house almost 3000 orchids---mostly catts. The collection started in 1921 when Alice Dupont was given a dozen cattleyas. In 1948 A sister in law of Pierre du Pont left her collection and her orchid grower to Longwood. I guess when your that rich your gardener/orchid grower is your property to leave in your will. LOL Some of the original DuPont orchids are still part of the collection. The orchid display in the conservatory is freshed with orchids from the orchid houses every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
