It may be only one bloom, buts it's a bloom to die for! I love purpuratas! I have one that I bought not knowing the form. I still don't know the form considering the buds died off after the plant took a tumble...hope it grows up to be half as pretty as this one!

Been doing a lot of study on purpurata lately. Its full name is L. purpurata roxo-violeta 'Do Crente', and it's a famous cultivar. If you're curious, 'Do Crente' means 'the Believer'.

Might pair it up with Cjcorner's tenebrosa--what a Luminosa that would make!

    Quite a find! Grats!

Thanks everyone for your kind words! Thanks Desdinova for the ID!
This one is my favorite. It blooms twice a year in Guangzhou and easy growing. Hope more and more people will have it!

[QUOTE=Desdinova;311149]Been doing a lot of study on purpurata lately. Its full name is L. purpurata roxo-violeta 'Do Crente', and it's a famous cultivar. If you're curious, 'Do Crente' means 'the Believer'.

    Crente means 'believer'.
    Do means 'from'.
The cultivar's name means translated 'From the Believer'. The believer was the man introducing this plant in to the orchid collectors world.
In the south of Brazil is is common to describe in the cultivar the origin of the plant. Originally it wasn't meant to give the plant a cultivar.
It was a way to distinguish the different plants in meetings and discussions. Only later with the commercialization it turned in to be a cultivar.
Some commercial growers kept the plants original name, some gave the plant a different name.
It is possible to find the same plant with different names.

An other example is the C. purpurata var. oculata with the cultivar 'Da Pedreira'. Nowadays simply 'Pedreira'
Pedreira means quarry. This plant was found in or near a quarry.

Whenever a plant has a cultivar in portuguese using a persons name or a place, it is a clone or a cutting from an old plant collected long time ago in nature.
