    How is this plant doing?
I seem to remember reading some decades ago, that C. rex was much loved by early hybridizers, but was difficult to cultivate. It was pretty rare, as well. Apparently, it does not like the high heat associated at that time with Cattleya. It is a mountain forest species preferring cool, moist conditions. Also, it was considered a variety of C. labiata, which is a warm-growing species. Cattleya dowiana and C. aurea were prefered in breeding due to their easier cultivation and, similar to C. rex, yellow colouring.

I agree, it is one of the most handsome species of Cattleya. The slightly rolled sepals are quite atrtactive and set off the lip and petals very well. Mind you, this was considered a fault at the turn of the 19th century! Big and flat and full and ruffled was the goal. Our tastes today are much more refined....and diverse.

    Jamie
