i've been looking at alata for a few weeks, trying to find a good strain and color... so i am not an expert, but having done some research on them lately, i'm going to guess it is not a full alata species. the petals are not long enough compared to the photos i have been viewing, and this is more star shaped, witht he petals more open flat. there are several other encyclias with this look, and these colors. this could be a cross with alata and something else though. i could also be completely wrong. is it scented? alata should have a strong scent. that and i hear it can take my winter temps are why i have been looking into them. whatever it is, this is a beautiful orchid. great colors.

Thanks guys! I thought it was a hybrid as well. It is quite fragrant. I am not too worried about an ID anyway. I am not going to be showing or breeding...just enjoying!

right! i pretty much only pay attention to species because of temp requirements, i try to grow mostly outside, not everything can handle it. alata can take my temps, and this must be at least very closely related... so weatherwise i bet yours can take some low temps.

Where are you located? I leave mine out until we are forecast below 40F. The plant looks like hell, but it grows and blooms just fine.

Could be a cross with parviflora, where it got its midlobe from. Apparently alata has some extreme variations on floral segments, but always bigger than parviflora.
