The bifoliates are also difficult even though they too hang up high...so I don't know.

I know how lucky I am to have a conservatory, but it is still not all plain sailing! The funny thing is that even though the winter night minimum goes down to 10 Celsius, my Paphs love it and grow like topsy! Anyway- I am full of admiration for people who have the knack of growing and flowering without having a glasshouse of some kind. (How lucky are folks in the tropics or Florida and so on: they can use the back yard!)

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated. And wow- that's a glorious specimen that is almost hiding you in your avatar. That's a prize winner right there, surely!

    Hi Arkley-
Yes it is fragrant... particularly on a sunny day. It comes into flower after the Summer is over and it gets time to strike the shading, so we get some more sun and warmth through the glass. I shall look up Pot Roy's Magic thank you for the pointer!

Pretty blooming! And excellent photo also! Do you grow under sunlight or artifial lights?

Thank you so much! I grow under glass- in a conservatory (glasshouse attached to the house)... it is square in plan, the roof and two side walls are glass (any more glass, and the Summer temperatures would be very difficult to keep down). It is kept cool in the warm months with white shading, but the cattleyas hang high from the roof where there is a lot of filtered light. In the dark cold months there is no shading: we need all the sunlight to come in directly and keep things warm. That way you can live with your plants, but provide better conditions than if they were right in the house with you.
The photo was taken inside, on a table against a white wall, using three flashes firing together from different angles to balance the light.
