How tall do these guys get? I might have to go buy one... now that I see how many people love them! That color combo is just amazing! It reminds me a bit of the '80s and early '90s when all those bright colors worn together
Now let's put some 'Prince' on the boom box and party like it's 1999....or, uh...something..
were in fashion. People would wear green shirts with yellow sleeves and purple collars! Just like these flowers!

I'm jumping back into this thread because I have a question... I am seriously looking to get one of these plants, but I see two clones out there that are both fairly popular. One is called "Flame Thrower." It has been awarded by the AOS and is more expensive and more difficult to find than its cousin, 'Tyler.'

I started looking for the 'Flame Thrower,' just based on the assumption that it was probably a better orchid due to the fact that it's been awarded. But the more I stare at pics of people's 'Tyler' clones, the less I can tell the difference between 'Tyler' and 'Flame Thrower.' In fact, they look pretty much identical to me.

Can anyone help me distinguish any differences between these two cultivars? I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra money to get the 'Flame Thrower' if 'Tyler' is pretty much an identical plant, yet available for half the price or less.

Thoughts? I'm stumped on this one.

Jenn, I have not seen them side to side. By pictures I don't see much of a difference. An HCC/AOS is not a very high award. The plant, due to it's Epi pseudepidendrum parent can get quite tall. I believe 'Flame Thrower" had a reddish flame in the lip. I know that mine doesn't http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...uple-epis.html But most pics of 'Tyler' has it too! I wouldn't worry about which one to get.

jenn, the only difference i see is the shape of the lip. flame thrower seems more narrow and angular, and tyler is more rounded and full, so i went with tyler! my seedling is about 2 years old now, and about 22" tall i think. no flowers yet though... was hoping the last real strong growth would be the one, but nothing yet. i'm not sure if these bloom on new or mature growths. my last growths all matured last fall, and have gotten enough light all winter to keep them a nice reddish-purple tint on the leaves. it sits right next to a zygo hybrid that is spiking like crazy and just below a spiking renanthera and encyclia cordigera... so i'm thinking light is not an issue, and maybe it's just not ready... this is the first seedling i have grown to blooming size, and it is nerve wracking! it tends to sit there for a long time doing nothing between new growths.

Epicatts have been easy for me to grow. I did learn that young plants need considerably more water than older plants. When I see the size of the roots increasing I cut back on watering. At least for me, Epicatts grow slowly until they develop a good root system then experience rapid growth. The blooms on this plant look as good today as when the picture was taken
