Default Potinara Dick Smith 'Aloha Spirit'

No idea what the new taxonomy of catts, etc has done to this name, but the parents are Pot. Hisako Akatsuka and Blc. Hawaiian Lightning. I'm clueless without my OWiz program, but it's at home on my other computer.

Anyway, 'Aloha Spirit' doesn't seem to be as widespread as the clone 'Paradise', although from the photos I've seen, there is so much variation among the numerous clones of Pot. Dick Smith, it's hard to know why - a marketing thing, I suppose.

I was fortunate to pick up a division of an older plant, so this one is pretty established. The fragrance is charming, and the blooms lasted nearly 3 weeks in this weird warm/cool/cold/warm again weather we're having here in South Florida. I've been leaving my orchid outside despite the fact that night temps have gone into the 40s a couple of times. So far, not much damage seen, but there's plenty of time to see how it plays out.

When I took this, it was past its peak - a shame, since it had been so perfect and vibrant.

You have 'Paradise, ed? Do you have any photos of it? I'd love to what your blooms look like in comparison. When, generally does yours bloom? This one really needds repotting and 'm wondering about mounting it - what do you think?

Those are some beautiful colors. With fragrant blooms also that's definitely a winner.

Maura, I've just recently started growing some mini-catts on mounts (cork and tree fern) and I'm excited about how quickly they attach and how well they grow. One thing to consider is whether the flower spike is self supporting or not. I figure there's no point in mounting orchids that need to be staked.

I am not big into splash-petal Catts but the color combo is stunning!

23 species and at least 10 generations of breeding to get to this. All Cattleya now except Rhyncholaelia digbyana, so Rlc. it is. If that is what it looks like when it is fading it must have been a laser light show when it was fresh.

If I remember correctly, if I treat it well it blooms twice a year, mine just bloomed in January. Tucker gives good advice about mounting. You could also repot it in a tree fern pot and in some time you have a mounted plant, I've done this to several and use tree fern pieces and charcoal as the medium, hers a pic of 'Paradise' Name: pot dick 2 (Copy).jpg
