This is a discussion on Lc Netrasiri Faiball x Thihty 'Casen's choice' within the Cattleyas, Vandas, Dendrobiums IN BLOOM forums, part of the Orchid Photography category; OH... MY... GOSH!!! I think I found out what this actually is!!! As I'm lying ...
OH... MY... GOSH!!! I think I found out what this actually is!!! As I'm lying here recovering in bed (see my latest "where have I been?" post), I was doing some poking around on some orchid sites. Well, I was following some of the clues you all had provided me as to the possible origin of the plant, and I was looking for Netrasiri crosses that came out of Thailand, and I happened upon this guy's nursery! There were a bunch of pics of Netrasiri crosses, (many didn't have any registered names associated with them, but I did find THIS photo, which looks EXACTLY like mine.)
So I was thinking... this must be it!! But for a name, or parentage? Still nada. And it wasn't even listed as a Netrasiri Fireball offspring... it was just classified as having come from a Netrasiri parent. Then I was doing further research down the dark rabbit hole that is "finding the parents" of a mystery cross, and I stumbled across an orchid enthusiast who had seen what I swear was MY ORCHID at a show and taken a pic of it, AND included the name!! Here it is!!
I SWEAR if this isn't my orchid I'll eat dog food (or perhaps that's just the painkillers talking at the moment... let's not hold me to that at a future date, 'kay? )
Anyway, I'd love to know your opinions on this, friends. The parentage of this plant is actually WAY different than the parentage listed on the tag, and I think a few of you have already mentioned that you thought the parentage looked doubtful, as mine was a spotty and neither of the parents were. The parentage of Cattlianthe Yuan Nan Leopard is Cattlianthe Varut Startrack x Cattleya Netrasiri Beauty. So there is a Netrasiri IN there... it just seems that the wrong one was listed on the tag. And the Varut Startrack accounts for the spots, color, and texture.
By gosh, I swear I've found my orchid!!
I'm not sure if the 'Leopard' part of it is a clonal epithet... I don't think it is, but from the pics I've seen online of the Yuan Nan Leopard, they all look pretty much the same... which is, to say, exactly like mine. Perhaps when you cross these two parents you just don't get that much variation in the offspring? I don't know... but at any rate, I'd love to hear your opinions. I don't live super-close to the nursery where I bought it, and I know some of you have suggested marching back in there with the plant and demanding a proper name... but the new owner even said herself that she owns that same plant and loves it, and she didn't say anything about the tag being wrong. I'd have to check with the old owners... and they're apparently not present very much... anyway, I DID buy this plant from a respected nursery that does have awarded plants that they've created, so you'd think this would be an easy case to solve.
It would be rather gratifying to call them up and say, "Hey, you know that plant you have called Lc. Netrasiri Faiball x Thihty 'Casen's Choice?' Yeah, well, there's no such plant. Here's what it REALLY is...
What do you think? Have I found my orchid?
