When I first saw a photo of this little orchid...I googled around to try to find a little more info about it. I only have a few orchids, so I try to figure out what might do well in my little growing area before I buy a plant (hoping to reduce my odds of killing it immediately by having the right plant in the wrong place). I saw on IOSPE and in a couple of chats online that folks who were growing it said it was sweetly fragrant.

On the other hand, I keep reading that Zygopetalum is fragrant and I've never detected any fragrance from them when I've seen them at flower shows (maybe they're fragrant at night?). So, I haven't given them a try, yet.

I guess I'm a pushover for fragrant orchids. With such a small area to grow plants, I try to get a much bang-for-the-buck as I can. LOL

Fragrant or not, though, that Den. atroviolaceum is such an oddly beautiful flower, I'll just be ecstatic if it successfully blooms at all. I've got a long time to bite my nails, though. The flower spikes are still little nubs about a half inch long.

    :-)

You must have plenty of new groth's to produce those "little nubs' so your on the right track. Give it time and don't worry about them to much. I look forward to your photos when the blooms pop open! AL

Thanks for the good wishes, Al.

There are two new growths coming along. There are five flower spikes atop a few of the older growths.

BTW...I had cut back on fertilizing them before I saw the flower spikes start. Once I saw the nubs start to emerge, I started giving them weakly weekly fertilizer. Is that right?

Congratulations to both of you. Very nice flowers. According to Jay's Internet Species Photo Encyclopedia, it should be perfumed.

Good to know about the Zygo not being fragrant throughout the day. Maybe my timing was just bad. I really like the look of the flower and the overall plant. I might have to put it back on my "gotta have" list. :-)

My Zygo was fragrant all day. Perhaps something to do with temperature?
