    Talking Aerides Pramote

This primary hybrid has never been a particular favourite of mine as I consider the colour, a 'greenish yellow', rather dull and drab. I used to describe this colour as 'duck shit' ( a translation of our rather colourful local dialect). When I bought it I had hoped for a brighter colour from its Aer houlletiana parent but its other parent Aer flabellata seems to be dominant both in colour and form. The only saving grace, until now,has been its lip which is quite attractive. However, the weather this year has been very weird - a very cool and dry Dec to mid Feb and the last 2 weeks extremely hot and dry(desert type). So it has been nearly 4 months of drought and now I have to water 3 times a day. This weird weather seems to suit most of the orchids though . Recalcitrant ones are spiking and blooming and drab ugly ducklings have morphed into swans including this one! The blooms this time has even inspired me to try a high-key picture.

NB Aer flabellata has now been reclassified as a Vanda (according to Roy) and so this is now an Aeridovanda?

Quite an intriguing look! I do empathize with you, Yew, about the desire for brighter, richer, or cleaner yellows.

You apparently aren't feeding your ducks the right foods, Dean.

I'm referring to our free-ranging ducks that are let out every morning to forage in the neighbourhood ponds, streams, padi fields, disused tin mine ponds, swamps. These ducks feed on fish, snails, crustaceans and frogs etc and swamp plants and weeds and other types of vegetation. It is this vegetation that gives that characteristic 'duck shit' colour. The nearest we have to this colour that I can compare it with, is overboiled/overcooked green vegetables.

The last couple of months between 55%-65% and today it is 78% and raining at the moment(the first rain in 4 months). Hopefully this will herald the beginning of the wet season.
