Cool Vanda Miss Joaquim 'Douglas' AM/AOS

I purchased this plant in spike recently to sit next to my own plants...to basically shame them. I hope it works. Mine are almost five feet tall and haven't bloomed. Some are about 4 foot and the one that is the tallest is planted next to an Arachnis.

The petals sit at a strange angle. The lip however is my favorite part of this flower.

When you see this flower in the shade it looks so fragile.

I think you can see why I am upset my plants haven't bloomed yet. I am going to be moving them out into the yard farther and drowning them in fertilizer for the rest of the summer!

This is a terete Vanda, right? It needs the most extreme light that even challenges the light in the tip of Florida. I guess there is no problem if you have had success with these kind of Vandas before.

Congrats Connie for acquiring this beautiful variety of Miss Joaquim. The var Douglas has the largest flower in the Papilionanthe family. All Miss Joaquim love to grow in full sun, and will start to bloom as soon as they clear the top of their support (stake )', so stakes or supports should be between 3 - 4 feet to encourage blooming at short height. Some growers allow the plants to climb trees and wonder why their Miss Joaquim bloom far up above the foliage of their trees.

beautiful color, I love teretes and wish they were a bit easier to acquire, sometimes the 'shaming' method works. My experience has been there is no such thing as too much water, my Miss Joaquim , has a saucer under it that is almost always has water in it during the summer and it seems to love it.

I am not surprised that Miss Joaquim loves that saucer of water. One of the parents of this primary hybrid is Papilionanthe (Vanda) hookeriana which grows in swamps and bogs. Btw that delightful lip comes fromhookeriana.
