I had this name on my wanted list for yonks. Finally found it on a dealers list and ordered it, and something went wrong and the plant was in a parcel with others for 6 weeks before I discovered it. I am amazed it survived, but here it is - a young plant 6 inches high with two growths, and two flowers. Quite big ones for the genus, very impressive. Now I ahve to find how to really grow it, to getr a specimen.

Is it ? Sect.formosae ? I know I can look it up, but I'm just taking a five minute breather in the middle of some household chores, and I don't want to go there just yet. Is Sect. formosae what used to be called nigro-hirsute, before the n word became a dirty word ? D.infundibulum for example - the canes covered with fine short dark hairs. My schuetzei isn't like that at all. Maybe I am on the wrong track here !

Yes Geoff. what I have been following, it belongs section formosae aka nigro-hirsute. what I observe is that some of the members don't have a black hairs on them. I have a Dendrobium parthenium which also belongs to section formosae but don't see any hairs on new or old growth. I am not sure if Dendrobium section classification again could be based on DNA?

They don't improve, of course (my eyes) but as long as I am not trying to read print of certain sizes, I get by. Problems now are my dearly beloved- she is awaiting open heart surgery to replace one of the valves. She is well and cheerful, but gets very tired , very quickly. Fortunately I am a good cook etc, but I don't get much time off duty - I am looking forward to her stay in hospital - I shall stay in a room near her, maybe next to her, and someone else can do the cooking and washing up etc for two weeks.....If all goes well, maybe we will think of a really long cruise for her convalescence - round the world in Queen Mary, perhaps, and really spend the kids inheritance in a big way. But could I leave my orchids for 3 months ? That is a hard question.

All the best to you and the loved one. I hope everything goes well and I may get a chance to wave to you from the docks when Queen Mary visits this part of the world. I am in serious training now for my trip to Nepal this Dec, for some easy treks in the Kathmadu Valley and around Pokhara. This trip is a gift from my eldest and youngest son who will be accompanying me on the trip. Why Dec in the middle of the winter - that's the only time that both of them can arrange their annual leave.
