    Default Vanda Robert's Delight

There are many varieties of V Robert's Delight but this clone the var. Garnet Beauty is quite difficult to bloom here. The flowers are quite big, almost 4 inches across and are very flat. This is only the 4th time in 6 years that it has bloomed.

Why do you think it is hard to bloom there?

I actually don't know. My other Robert's Delight(s) bloom about 3 times a year and other strap leaved vandas 3 - 5 times a year.

Gorgeous! I am wondering if some crosses have a species in there somewhere that bloomed once a year and that gene pops up in some hybrids while others without that gene bloom over and over. I have a few vanda's that bloom the same week every year, and a couple that will only bloom every other year or every few years, while others bloom over and over every chance they get. Those flowers are definitely nice enough to put up with the infrequent blooming cycle...very nice!

I would be very happy if my strap vandas would bloom at least once a year, Yew. I don't think the natural dappled sunlight they receive is good enough. I think putting all of them under shade cloth would give more constant conditions and trigger more frequent blooming. But I don't like the appearance of shade cloth. Makes me fell like I'm in a commercial nursery rather than in my own little garden.

Our climate here is Equitorial (hot and wet all year round) while Hawaii has a sub-tropical climate ..... could that be a reason?

You could be onto something. Maybe a slight temp dip is necessary. *shrug*
