Default Cattleya trianaei 'Cashen's' X 'Broomhills'

Started to open on the 24th. Scent is still developing; pleasant and sort of like vanilla. We've had a lot of rain, and the bloom already has a couple of spots from droplets getting on it. Other bud blasted from excess water in the sheath.

It is a bummer to lose the other buds...but what I have learned is that means the single flower gets all the nutrients and ends up wayyy bigger. And you got a nice floofie there! I get the single flower on a regular basis and sometimes I have to say...when they look like yours...only one is just fine! Nice one...and the color is a wonderful pink

    Mahalo for the comments!

I agree with the single bloom getting all the nutrients, however if it happens late in the development cycle, I believe that the size is already pretty much determined; if early in the development, then it should make a difference. Sometimes growers will intentionally take a needle and destroy a bud while still in sheath so that the remaining one (or ones) should be larger, and better able to be awarded. If this is detected (by inspecting for just this type of damage on the sheath itself), the plant is NOT awarded. It has to develop naturally to earn an award. A few still sneak through, however.
