This is one of those dendrobe's that sit in the greenhouse doing nothing for ever and ever, and then suddenly you notice that a new growth has appeared. You water and feed as fast as you can, and then it goes to sleep again.( keep dry and maybe cool too , then ) . The flower bud is the same thing. One day you didn't see it, the next it is a lump, rapidly swelling. Of course all this means that the flowers don't last too long - a week, maybe 10 days. Mine - this plant - opened yesterday ; there is a big UK show opening next Friday( Malvern International Orchid Show to give it the grand name bestowed by the organisers - but hey, it's is often ( not always) the best orchid show in UK , maybe as many as 28 orchid displays this year, I see, about equally divided between traders and UK Orchid Societies. This plant is going there to be on one of the OS displays if it is still good - perhaps depends on the weather between now and then. If warm and sunny, it may have gone over ; if cool and showery, should be OK. . It won't win anything of course , but it helps with the whole thing ( and a dozen other plants I am sending include a couple which conceivably could win something ).
Btw has a faint scent too. Whether bronckartii is really distinct from amabile is not a questiuon for me. The trader I bought it from a dozen years ago said it was distinct ; I have flowered amabile too, and it looked a bit different, so I am leaving the original label on.
