Forgive me for the stupid question since I am new to orchids, but what kind of orchid is this? Cattleya, Vanda or Dendrobium? Do the blooms last a long time? I have only had experience with Phals, but eventually want to branch out to new kinds.

This orchid is a cattleya alliance and the name stands for Brassolaelia. I grow mine in a greenhouse which provides it with humid, warm and very bright conditions. It requires less care than say my Dendrobriums or Oncidiums which require more daily watch on watering needs.

A small clarification. Anyone looking for the plant or more information will need to know the name is Petite Stars, not Petite Star. And it is considered a Blc. (Brassolaeliocattleya) now rather than Bl. (Brassolaelia), though that is part of the shift in classification in the Cattleya alliance that many resist.

It is one of the many progeny of Bc. Richard Mueller that are almost becoming a class of their own, generally very easy to grow in bright light though usually not particularly long lived flowers (weeks not months). Blooming 2 or 3 times a year is possible though.

Sciencegal....no Question to us are stupid, because we all know that not everyone is "really" knowledgeable to the dot. we all encounter new problems, and sometimes have forgotten about it after a long while, when we have surpassed it. We are only here to remind each other like brothers and sisters.

What is great in this board that everyone is REALLY helpful in imparting their different experiences, in their "own environment". We only just have to adjust it to suit our scenario.

    God Bless.
