Hi Zainal, I am impressed that a cool growing cattleya like percivaliana can bloom in Melaka. I am a collector of cattleya species in Toronto (over 100 cattleyas) and I needed the cool nights to trigger them to bloom. I am also fellow Malaysian from Sarawak! Apa khabar! Do you do anything special for them like air conditioning?

Hi Parry, thanks for the comment.

What kind of cattleya orchids do you have? Perhaps Zainal can help suggest for Singapore (not far from you).

I'm also new to this wonderful Catts so far I have almost 30 over species just collected early this year few of them so matured as you said refused to bloom could be from highland types. Those in my hand already show off their beauties are Catt forbesii, walkeriana, aclandiae, nobilior, bowringiana, luteola, loddigesii, harrisoniae and percivaliana. The rest I'm still waiting as Leslie said they need cool night in order to stimulate buds formation it's seems that I will have more vegetative growth rather than seeing wonderful flower. I must be positive will wait and see.

If the plants in question do form sheaths in new growths, perhaps moving them to a cool room at night for 2 to 4 weeks may trigger bud formation. The best night temperature is 17C (my plants tolerate to 12C!!) ...Of course the day temperature should rise 15C higher. Depending on the species, these may be enough. Do know which ones to put in by googling Chadwick's articles on each cattleya species. This method works only when growths are fully mature. I hear the Taiwanese move some plants into the mountains for best blooming with the cool temperatures.
