I might not have bought mine if I had realized how big it gets. But I do have a friend at the GH that said if I ever wanted to sell mine, she would be interested. But it does bloom every year for me! So at least it makes it worthwhile to keep.

This orchid can grow to 14 feet tall when fully mature and has the room. I have to keep mine off-site in a GH due to its size and future potential size. Google for it and you will see some amazing Den spectabiles!
Holy Crap! I've seen them at 4-5' but 14'!

Thank you Sriram. It spent the summer outside with light shading all day. I stopped fertilizing at the end of September when it started showing spikes but have watered pretty much weekly. We had a very long period of cloudy weather through Oct.-Nov. and the spikes stopped growing for that time. One thing I've noticed is that this plant has already started to get new growth. Last year it started growing in January and stopped in July.

Winter here. The spikes started in late summer early fall. I've tried finding info on flowering times in New Guinea but no luck. Perhaps you could expect flowering in the same time period as there.

My spectabile is just now starting to spike and it is mid/late winter here. It is in a greenhouse though. In the last 2 years, it had begun spiking in late November.

Beautiful weird flowers. How big is your plant for it to bloom?

    beautiful!!!
i have this plant but it is very difficult to bloom at my place, the plant required significant and constant temperature changes during daytime and at night to initiate bloom
