    Default Cattleya Mari's Love

I'm a bit confused about the actual name of this one. The tag reads C. Mari's Love but I can't find any pictures of that, just Rlc. Mari's Song which doesn't look like this. So going with what the tag says. The 2nd shot is what the spike looked like a week or two ago. When I got it last year it was flowering from a leafed pseudobulb but this time it came in more like C. walkeriana.
I know that species is a great grandparent or something (hard to say when you can't really ID the plant for sure) but would that influence the blooming this much in the descendant?

I checked out your plant on Orchidwiz. It is a hybrid between Mari's Song and Love Knot. There have been maybe a dozen varieties awarded, and pics of half a dozen are on the programme. There is some fair amount of variation, and yours is fairly typical. probably the awarded varieties had flatter flowers ( no backward curving of the lateral petals).
In terms of breeding, it is a bit of a mongrel, with 7 species involved, plus "other" so I guess anything can happen ; I have heard that with such complex crosses, the flowers can change quite a bit from one year to the next , something or instability it is called.

Thank you for all the information Geoff! It'll be like getting a new plant every year. Maybe that will help curb my desire to acquire more!

Yours looks a lot like C. Mari's Love 'Taka'. This is mine that flowered a while back. It may not be 'Taka' but quite nice anyway.

That's nice too Roy! I've been assuming that if two hybrid plants have the same name, that they would have nearly identical flowers. Just starting to see that is not necessarily true. More adjustments to make in an already decrepit mind.

Chris - the cross (grex - any orchid resulting from the same cross of the parents) will receive a name and then individual plants with exceptional qualities often get a specific name. That name will be in the ' ' marks like: C. Mari's Love 'Taka'. The grex name is Mari's Love, the individual is named 'Taka'. As there can be quite a variety in any cross, if you get one with it's own name, it's a clone or division of the original and you know what to expect. Sometimes when cloned the plant will mutate also and be a bit different. I hope that helps to explain it!
