Default Budded Cattleya: When to Remove From Under Grow Lights

If grow lights are to promote photosynthesis, when can one pull a budded plant from under the banks? Have researched and haven't found much helpful detail. I myself pull when the oldest bud is throwing out scent, about a week or so before popping, but wondered if that was best practice.

Welcome! I try to move mine when buds are near full size but before there is a risk of buds touching the lights. And when we want to display the plant elsewhere.

It depends on your priorities. The best thing for the plant is to just stay where it gets the best light and care, but of course you want to enjoy the blooms where you can see them and show off your growing skills. If the place you want to put the plant has some natural light you may get the most graceful flower presentation if you move it a couple weeks earlier than has been discussed to allow the spike and buds to finish developing in orientation to the light there.

After some 40 years of greenhouse growing, I'll soon be moving back under lights, and am delving into the "what's adequate" versus "what would be best" question, so thanks for bringing this up.

It seems to me that if you have to grow your plants so close the the lamps that they interfere with blooming, you actually don't have enough light, and that you'd do much better to increase the wattage and move them farther up.
