    Default Papilionanda Gelora Bandung?

    Not sure about the ID, saw this at a local nursery. Was hoping cattan or some other member can help verify the ID. Gelora Bandung is Vanda Memoria Fumiko Otomo x Papilionanthe teres.

    Mem Fumiko Otomo = Onomea x coerulea
    Onomea = Rothschildiana x sanderiana
    Rothschildiana = sanderiana x coerulea

    So it has very heavy vanda coerulea bloodline in one parent. Coupled with the teres parent, I think this is why it is not a free flowering plant. Only had one main season per year. A pity as I really like the long spikes of well-spaced out flowers. Hope someone can remake similar blue Papilionandas using more free-flowering modern hybrids.

    Wow. Awesome. Have not seen this cross before. Certainly a lot of coerulea in the blood line..

    That is a beautiful Papilionanda. I have seen it being offered by a vendor at one of our local orchid shows. I'm sorry I can't offer any more info other than that it was registered in 1964 according to the RHS Orchid Register.The one I saw had a very long spike like the one in your picture.Although it only blooms once a year it is still a very desirable orchid. I don't know if anyone has made a recross of this vanda but I hope with the renewed interest in terete Papilionanthe and semi-terete vandas some enterprising breeder will attempt to repeat this cross.Thanks for posting pictures of this most interesting 'blue' semi-terete vanda.

    Thanks, catttan.. A similar remake using the modern electric blue hybrids like Pachara Delight would be stunning.

    Couldn't resist. I went back and got myself a top-cutting in bloom.
