    Plant patents can be obtained for orchids too, exactly as for roses. There have been a few patented cultivars. I remember some very heated discussions in the early days of internet email lists and discussion groups when a couple patented cultivars were released and some thought it was a terrible thing. It doesn't make economic sense with the realities of orchid production and marketing, so it doesn't happen much. It would be completely disregarded by mass market producers anyway, and as long as they sold the patented plant as a NoID there wouldn't be much that could be done about it.

    When I started this thread the plant had budded and bloomed indoors. This time it's on the back deck. I think the colour is better this time.
