    Default A new (old) Beauty

Bought this in a 4" pot without looking at name or seeing any pictures, just decided to see what I wound up with. This is it:

    Name: newbeauty.jpg
Views: 293
Size: 123.6 KB

    (I do have it's name...) It's a primary hybrid - - any guesses?

PS Flowers are 7" tall and 6" wide, lovely lilac scent

    Default Portia

I'm terrible at this game but I'm guessing Cattleya Portia...

If it's not Portia..is one of the parents Bowringiana?

Maybe this will help - it really is much more lilac colored than the photo appears... And it is a cross between 2 South American species.

Are we allowed to venture one more question?
Is it a hybrid between a Laelia species and a Cattleya species (a Lc) or a hybrid between two Cattleya species (a C.)? It does look like a hybrid of those large flower species. I think I have the name for it already but with such a dark color, I am not so sure! The color is throwing me off.
    Cheers. Hoa.

LOL - She didn't promise her hints would help, Murray!

Actually, Central America isn't technically part of South America. And Catts hale from both.

Actually, Gin (if I can butt in on your game, Diane), focus on the non Catt parent. (Hoa's lead...) That will be easier to ID. The unifoliate Catt species are tougher to distinguish in parentage. Many are very similar.

    Default Geographically Challenged

Sorry if my clue was confusing . . . I was trying to indicate that the parents are native to two different countries in South America. The other clue, which most seem to have picked up on is that the color is more

    "purp(ley)ata"

The second parent is the national flower of it's native country, I have a pin from that country which is made to look like this bloom. (although the pin is quite lovely, I'd rather have a nice speciman sized plant!)
