Default Rlc. Toshie Aoki 'Starburst' AM/AOS

This is the second spike I have had this year, the first spike was a double bloom but they were deformed and never really opened fully and the color was off. The last time this Cattleya bloomed was in 2015. I had never realized the colors on the inside of the lip until taking pictures, amazing what a real close up shot can give you!

    Thanks guys!

Here is a picture of the first bloom, maybe Kirk or Roy can explain why this happened, or anyone else out there that might know!

The color and pattern deep in the lip come largely from C. dowiana which accounts for over half the ancestry of Rlc. Toshie Aoki. The 'Starburst' clone is noted for the more purple lip color than most of the cross, and the splashed petals and sepals, of course. Though I think the color here is over-saturated, at least as it appears on my tablet. It looks like the ants are enjoying the colors close up.

The earlier flowering looks like buds were stressed very early in development, long before emerging from the sheath. Could have been heat, cold, too dry, many things, and may have been only a very short incident. Splash petals are a bit more prone to developmental problems, perhaps because of the mixed signals that cause the splashing.
