Plant is in a 4 inch basket , so you will see that it is not a giant ! But then I don't grow big vandas any more - they all got burnt when the greenhouse got too hot with a boiler problem , at a time when I was unable to visit the greenhouse.

The parentage here is Vanda cristata x Asctm garayii.

Mr Motes visited UK a couple of years ago and i bought quite a few of his small vanda seedlings - this is the latest to flower, and perhaps the first I shall keep.

Sorry that the pic is not very sharp; - I have some eye problems - "age related macular degeneration " the oculist said, and whilst I rely on auto-focus, I think this particular model of Nikon (D5300) which I used for this pic is not quite up to their usual standard. Maybe its time I stopped spending my spare change on new orchids, and bought a new camera instead ( what, not another camera , my wife would say - when she found it )

I was wondering how you got your hands on a Motes orchid, you have answered that question. I have many of his orchids been going to his nursery for over 8 years. Well done Geoff!

A local orchid society, not the nearest one to me, had a very energetic and enthusiastic chairman, who organised the visit : he also arranged a speaking tour for Tom Mirenda ( the orchid specialist at the Smithsonian in Wahington DC) this year - great opportunities for orchidists in UK. I joined that Society as a consequence and put up with bad journeys on a too crowded motorway , sometimes taking a couple of hours to travel 25 miles in the peak holiday season, this month - the enthusiasm makes it worthwhile. Unfortunately that guy has given up the chair - harassed by his wife who says she is tired of being an orchid widow..... It remains to be seen how long his legacy of enthusiasm will survive, and whether orchids will be a greater tug than marital peace !

This Vanda is one of those smaller ones I started collecting two years ago. Your picture is better than most posted here so I don't see any problem at all. I will post another small Vanda from the same place within a week or so. Good one Geoff!

Maybe it is when I look at my pics on my 27 inch Mac, and see a bigger picture, that I see the lack of sharpness, or maybe I am just too fussy....

It does look like the autofocus found the leaves rather than the flowers, but I think the pictures are still quite effective at showing the charm of this primary cross with strong color from garayi and the distinctive floral architecture of a cristata cross.
