Beautiful purp! I've noticed that some have the yellow in the throat, and some do not. Also, that's the first one I've ever seen with an open lip like that.

It's stunning Jack, the linear striations in the yellow add so much interest also!

A very nice example of this hybrid, (C. mossiae x C. purpurata) x C. purpurata. Since it looks so much like C. purpurata and the name could be interpreted as a purpurata var. it is probably a good idea to be especially careful about correctly capitalizing the name C. (Lc.) Purpurata-Rex.

Probably most often made with "blue" forms, as this appears to be, it is interesting to see the striata type markings coming through as well. With so many distinctive forms of C. purpurata, and sometimes the C. mossiae could come through more strongly, you could have a whole collection of these that look different.

The slightly open lip here is unusual but not impossible for both species. The contrasting color and pattern in the lip would not be quite so visible in a closed tubular lip, so I think it is a good thing. Anything you can do to give it cooler nights while maintaining bright light would probably enhance color intensity and frequency of blooming, but if it grows well and does flower every 2-3 years it is certainly a keeper.

Thanks Marlene, I would agree with you that is why I took the close up of the lip area!

Thanks Kirk, I am glad we can count on you to let us know the correct name if needed.

A little difficult to give it cooler temperatures in a sub tropical climate, even though I would like it to bloom every year if it continues to do so every other year I am a happy camper!
