Default Dendrobium aphyllum var compactum ‘Sakura’, first bloom

I was not expecting any blooms at all this year so I will happily take these three. I purchased this plant last summer in a 2 1/2” plastic pot packed with sphagnum. The medium looked old so I immediately repotted it and discovered it was actually several small plants started from keikis. I put the better pieces in this 3” clay pot with kiwi bark and perlite topped with moss. The smaller pieces I just shoved in a spare plastic pot with moss.

At this point the plant did start putting on one reasonably strong growth and a bunch of keikis on the bare canes. Those I removed and stuck in a 3” clay tray with some moss plugged on top.

The thing is, I wasn’t able to give it a long cool down this year because we went pretty much from summer straight into winter. Anyway I brought it into the indoor growing room and didn’t feed it all winter and only sprayed the moss with water every seven to ten days to keep it from shrivelling. I didn’t have high hopes as this is my first time growing a deciduous species, but it surprised me with these three blooms.

Anyway I love it and will endeavor to give it better culture this year by feeding and watering more during the growing season and probably giving it absolutely no water at all in winter this time. It never did lose quite all of its leaves. The temperature thing I can’t do much about, but just pray for a nice long fall this year with 45 lows at night. Fingers crossed!

Thanks guys. Zain, the longest canes on this plant are about 18”. I’m not sure how large it will get but I hope it stays this small.
