Default CTNA Why Not x Schomburgkia Undulata

This cross didn't change the flower very much at all. It just added some undulations to the lip. But it changed the growth habit, so it can take more sun. I have this plant on trees all over my property. It makes a wonderful landscape plant here in Florida.

I love that flower, Aaron! It's got floof!

I looks like Why Not was the capsule parent. I bet if the cross were reversed you'd see dramatic differences, with the flowers showing much more Schomb!

I'm not sure, but maybe. As I uderstand it, it doesn't really matter which plant is the pod. It really pertains to the stonger characteristics of either plant. That's just what I have heard. I may be wrong. I have made crosses with B Digbyana, and have found that even though Digbyana wasn't the pod it's traits still came out stronger then the other. I'm not sure though

From the reversed crosses that I've seen, it definitely makes a difference, but that's not to say it will every time. Hoa has previously posted that the capsule parent contributes mitochondria and other cellular organelles that influence the development of the offspring.

    Was it your own cross?

No, this wasn't my cross. I'm not even sure who made this cross. It is a newly common cross around here in SW FL. I've seen the same flowers sold as ctna why not x schomb thompsoniana. I got all of my plants of this cross from a friend of mine. I'll have to ask him the next time I see him who made this cross.

Update for this cross/plant. I found out today from my friend that I got these plants from that they are SMBCTNA Garnet Glory HCC/AOS 'Juno Beach'.

While I'd agree there isn't a HUGE change to the shape, I do like the change it made -- speaking as one who really has never liked the form of 'why not'

Good point about the lip. I like that better than the plain Ctna.
