These blooms are absolutely stunning- congrats! I've never smelled one like that before- what does it smell like? (That's probably a hard question to answer..haha)

Thanks, everyone! It is a stunning flower, but the good growing was Diane's, and the awesome flowering is the plant's! I only earn credit for the lucky ownership!

I wrote out a long reply late last night, and then wanted to throw a link in and stupidly shifted away from this page before I posted, and lost my lengthy and nerdy response! I just went to bed!

Kerry, the culture is bright light, dry out between waterings (not a lot, but err on the side of one more day if you're not sure) and regular fert (1/4 recomended strength weekly). If you have good light, the watering is the trick. Bigger pots hold moisture longer. Plastic pots hold it much longer than clay. Catts prefer bark chips (use bigger chips for a bigger plant), but I do have a few in sphag for special reasons.

Watch the leaves - they should appear smooth and turgid (firm). If they develop ripples, wrinkles, or softness, it's a sign of too little water. The pseudobulbs should appear plump and firm, but older ones will naturally wrinkle and shrivel, so that's a tough indicator. Err on the side of too little water, but not too much! Overwatering will rot a Cattleya's roots faster than many other genera.

Thank you McMentor. Today is the first sunny day that we have had since arrival of new catt and BLC, so I am running into the room to check how hot the leaves feel, and see how much direct light they get onthe windowsill. Might have to come up with a contraption to ease them back a bit from the actual window.

Sorry, didnt mean to hijack post with my culture queries!

    Thanks, Judi!

Don't worry, Kerry - hijacking is a practiced art, and well...needs practice. It's encouraged, and, quite frankly, expected from our more E-VEAL members, which you seem to be shaping up to be...

After all, three pages of lovely comments on my Catt will only swell my head beyond its current dimensions. Think what a service you're providing our other members by preventing that!

You can use a camera's light meter to figure out light levels. But I'd think in jolly old England, your Catts will want all the sun you can give them.

I put my catts together with the Ascda and the Dend on the large SW/S facing bay window which has sun almost all day long and they don't seem to mind in the least so far. I shall be keeping an eye on them during the hot summer months because I know just how hot it can get but I reckon they are fine for now.

I repotted them into a mix of bark and charcoal and see through plastic pots and they don't need watering more than once a week. One of them was in quite fine mix originally and had a few rotten roots so Julie's right. I'm considering putting them into clay pots at some point but I quite like being able to see inside at the moment.

Elena, if your plants are getting mid-day sun, and you don't have screens on your windows, watch for sunburn during the summer months. Otherwise, you should be fine!
