Your plant is a 4N plant, meaning it has twice the number of chromosomes than usually found in an orchid of this species. This adds to vigor, flower size, etc.
Aha! Thanks for clearing this up for me, Clint. I was looking at plants online and some had that 4N designation - had no idea what it meant. Thought maybe it meant it would grow to 4x normal size or something.

However, I've read that colchicine sterilizes the plant.

Not sterile. Just will not interbreed readily. You kinda have to breed these with another 4N plant to "Match" up the chromosomes.

However, 3N plants are created when an normal plant and a 4N breed. 3N's are sterile. My Miltoniopsis santanei 4N x Pearl Ono 'Ilawai' is a 3N plant.

I wanted to ask..how large is your blooming p-bulb? I have one of these plants I just put in a 6" pot and the largest p-bulb is about 13". I hope the next p-bulb blooms for me!

The pseudobulb that carried these first blooms is 7 inches long. I wonder if my abuse of this plant caused it to bloom out of fear or perhaps it was the colchicine. About 3 years ago, I thought it would be cool to put this plant in a shallow bonsai pot and ended up frying a huge lead growth. My clumsy repotting out of this pot caused it to lose every root except one 2 inch portion. I put it into a tall semi-hydro pot with LECA only and the thing went nuts.

A 13" p-bulb sounds amazing. I heard these plants can grow huge.

Wow...I own a 4N plant and didn't even know what it meant, so thanks for clearing it up. I too love the color on this one!

But colchicine is a drug used to treat gout, likely in smaller doses than used on the orchids---and yes, it could do a lot of damage if given in high doses or for too long a time...I had NO idea it was used on plants too!

The following explains a little about how it works-----
