    Default Laelia tenebrosa

Here is Laelia tenebrosa blooming for the first time for me. The tag says it's colchicine treated, which supposedly makes it larger. But I guess this is a Hadrolaelia now.

Beautiful colors!! Why the colchicine? I thought that was to treat gout!

Colchichine (sp?) is used to create chromosomal doubling in orchids. They DON'T use it to treat gout. It is a carcinogen for humans.

Your plant is a 4N plant, meaning it has twice the number of chromosomes than usually found in an orchid of this species. This adds to vigor, flower size, etc.
