    Question Den. species stratiotes

I have one of these that I received bare root and in poor condition from a vendor. It has seemed healthy, then on the verge of dying, then made a come back. It is growing roots like crazy now and a new growth so I am encouraged. I have heard that dens need a winter rest. How severe a rest in the watering process should they get? Does this apply to young dens as well, as I have several babies. I have heard that I shouldn't water at all for several months. Is this right? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not all dendrobes need a dry winter rest. If you are referring to your stratiotes- in its native habitat there is only a short dry winter period of 2-3 months and even then there are the occasional showers. In cultivation you should reduce watering during this period. As to young seedlings I would I would continue with normal watering regime. Actually the dry rest period is normally to encourage and initiate flowering.

Congrats on acquiring the stratiotes. Not easy to get even in this region.

Thanks for the info. It just seems wrong to not water at all for several months. I was really worried about the seedlings dying on me.
