    Default Tamarac Candy Cane Amaryllis

I'm just absolutely tickled to be able to share this picture. When we bought this house, we found tons of Amaryllis growing on one side of the house. I began moving the overgrown mob and the first time they bloomed discovered I had some huge reds and some amazing white with red streaks. I ran around with the pollen from the hugest reds and dabbed at the biggest whites. Then I reversed the process and dabbed the pollen from the hugest whites onto the biggest reds. Then later I gathered the seed pods and collected seed.

Of all the seeds I've sown, one has grown into a fine plant and given me a peek at one of the new "crosses" I created about three years ago. I am amazed it has already given me a new flower....

So....introducing the "Tamarac Candy Cane" Amaryllis....named by my clever OH. What they lack in size, they make up for by being so unusual. I am wondering if as they get bigger they will get more red streaking on the bottom petals.

    It's lovely.

My experience with Amarilys is that they will produce large flowers as they get older. I had 12" flowers on my pink this year, the bulbs were 35 cm in circumference.. just to give you an idea..
