    Default Caterpillar Chrysalis

Well they have eaten their fill and have now formed chrysalis. The first picture is a Swallowtail in the J stage the second is the formed chrysalis and the third is a Swallowtail and a Monarch chrysalis. You can just start to see the wings in the Monarch chrysalis.

    Very nice, Cin!

The swallowtail's looks more like a leaf to me while the monarch's looks a bit like an unripe fruit. I've always loved the gold speckles on the monarch chrysalides (or chrysalises ... whichever one prefers for the plural)

Very cool Cin! They really blend in well for protection I suppose.

Yes BD the Swallowtail is much more camouflaged than the Monarch, which I believe is because the Monarch is so untasty to it's predators that is feels that it doesn't have to really hide. But as it ages it becomes such a beautiful jewel with golden trim, that it actually looks like jewelry

I just read that the gold dots on the monarch chrysalis actually are instrumental in the development of color and density of the upcoming wings and affect other parts of the body as well. Destruction of those dots adversly affects the development of the adult - not just ornamentation, everything has a purpose.

Not long Branka 10-15 days. the Monarch chrysalis will start to turn clear so you can actually see the butterfly inside. It is actually quite remarkable.
