Default Huernia schneideriana...Well this was a surprise

Well a two years ago I received some Huernia zebrina cuttings as a "bonus" in an orchid trade I made with someone on another forum. Since then, I've post pics of the flowers on several occasions as it has proven to be an easy grower and bloomer. (Still in "bloom mode" now as a matter of fact.) Well recently, what should I find blooming in my Huernia zebrina pot but this:

    Name: Huernia schneideriana A sm.jpg
Views: 9216
Size: 92.5 KB Name: Huernia schneideriana back sm.jpg

Size: 190.7 KB
    Name: Huernia schneideriana C sm.jpg

Size: 106.8 KB
    Name: Huernia schneideriana B sm.jpg

Note the flower is MUCH darker than it shows here ... more of a maroon color. I have been able to identify it as Huernia schneideriana. The flowers are about 1/2 the size of H. zebrina and unlike zebrina they do have a definite odor (though I haven't been able to figure out if it strikes me as more fecal or spoiling meat). Fortunately, the odor is so faint that unless one practically sticks the flower up one's nose (at least as far as my sniffer is involved) you'll never notice it.

Now ready for the "punch line"? When I contacted the woman from whom I received the cuttings (as I was endeavoring to determine the plant's ID), she was quite puzzled -- she's never seen this flower before! LOL

What have you been feeding the poor thing that it would want to produce a rotten meat flower? LOL

Interesting plant and bloom. Jonada, there are many plants that flower with Carrion Flowers (Rotten Meat smell). This is the way they attract their pollenators. In this genre many bulbophylum have this type of flower. Have Fun,Rich

I say 'lucky you' too! It is really pretty. I have a very dark, blood red almost purple black, Huernia that is blooming now for me. These are cool plants.

    Cheers,
    BD

Could be the same species, Bruce. Keep in mind that mine is actually much darker than pictured -- just happens to be one of those colors my little Pentax has issues trying ot capture accurately. The stems helped clarify the ID for mine.
