    Default Trillium erectum

Yup, this is a rhizome that's why I can put it here. If you want to be more specific, this is a rhizomatous, deciduous perennial hardy in zones 4-9. One of those great plants for the shade garden.

Well porn or no porn, I love how red that is.

All of this is making me want to spend time and money I don't have making a garden that's just going to be dug up or laid on by puppies.

Just going to have to hang out and look and learn.

    Just remember, YOU STARTED THIS!

The strange thing is, the flowers hang down, so I have no idea where that name comes from.

I just got a message about the 'erect' thing from a friend. Here's what she wrote:

"believe it or not... I have an itsy bitsy book on Trilliums. The kind of book that dedicates 6 little pages to erectum, and mentions it on another 23.

The name does refer to the pedicel, but apparently there is great variation within the species (including in the angle of the pedicel). Part of the diversity is a result of natural hybrids with
cernuum, flexipes, rugelii and probably others."

Stunning plant, to be sure, Kev! And Zone 4, eh? Hmm, we can grow some Zone 4 plants here...might try it!

Nodding trillium (Trillium cernuum) is native to Manitoba, and I've seen a couple of other species growing in the garden of some acquaintances of mine.

Interesting to speculate on, at any rate.

    Cheers,

    Rob
