Default Cactus used to be my main interest, now my sideline hobby

Cactus used to be my primary interest till i even get nick named cactus (in mandarin) in the varsity. i still love them, just that the trend seems to be fading off from the market and it is hard to meet a cactus enthusiast.
the first in the pic is Thelocactus setispinus

some last for a day or two, some if unpollinated last for about 3-4 days. but if you happens to keep a cephalium producing cacti like the melocactus, they can produce basically continuous blooms. but it takes about four years of cultivation before they are mature enough to form a cephalium
in addition, in climate where it is warm and humid throughout the year, some can produce blooms consecutively for months. this thelocactus used to produces bloom after another for almost a year until recently where it got hit by scale disease.

Nice cacti Ian. I grow a few cacti myself - 20 pots actually but never got really hooked on them. My favourite is Echinopsis oxygona with its beautiful big pink blooms, which unfortunately lasts only a day in the lowlands and about 3 days in the cool Cameron Highlands, but it more than makes up for that with its frequency of blooming - about 4-5 times a year. The most blooms I had at one time was 17 flowers. The flower stem is 7 inches and the flower is 3 inches across. That is my hand in the picture for comparison.

I have a cactus also. It is about 10 feet tall or so and blooms with big white and brown blooms. (not sure of the name) Reminds me of the kind of cactus seen in western/ cowboy movies. haha... Yours are beautiful, Ian and so are the ones you posted, Yew Sung.

    cheers,
    BD

WOW...that is one beautiful bloom. never had a chance to bloom and echinopsis. i got my echinopsis when i first started with cacti but they did not last long in my hands that are still new to cacti back then.
after years of trial and error, finally got a hang of it about cacti cultivation about 5 years back. my most recent attempt is to bloom a two astrophytum cacti and a echinocereus grussonii in low land.
and again thanks for sharing the pic Yew Sung, excellent photograph!

I have always loved cactus just for their shape. Didn't realize they could flower at first. But, if you want to kill a cactus just give it to me. I cannot make myself neglect them enough to survive.
