    Usually trunk size is the gauge of age with bonsai. And juniper is the classic tree used, though ANY tree can be made into bonsai. Of course you need young stock or at least a compact specimen.

    I wasn't aware that there are quite a few bonsai fanciers here or I would have taken pictures of these at our recent Farmers' Day Show where there were some bonsai exhibits.Apart from the popular local plant the 'Kesinai' or 'Sinai' (Streblus asper) there was one specimen of a bonsai Tamarind Tree that caught my attention. This was the first time I had seen a bonsai Tamarind Tree (Tamarindus indicus) and set me thinking why it had taken so long for bonsai fanciers to cultivate it as it has all the attributes of being a fine bonsai plant - beautiful ridged and textured bark, tough pliant branches and small light green leaves. How I wish I had taken a picture of it to post and share.
