Hmmm... now I am worried that all this attention would somehow be detrimental to the orchid that has been thriving in secrecy for decades.

Wow, still very tantalizing to not quite be able to see it clearly. But I guess that is the whole "ghost" idea, anyway, right? Very fascinating! And it seems a couple people have one and could see one up close - exciting!!

Has anyone read the Orchid Thief? It is AWSOME! I plan to take a trip to the Fakahatchee Strand soon. I'm a native Floridian and have never been there. After reading this book I've started looking in trees...and low and behold, I recently found an "encyclia tampensis" perched in a cypress tree!!! I was ECSTATIC!!!!

Yep, read it AND saw the movie. I learned a lot from it too, movie had a lot less of the plant knowledge and was more about the thriller aspects, but still good.

The Orchid Thief was a wonderful book. Quite a bit of Florida history in it also. Doodle, isn't it neat to find orchids in the wild? My husband and I camp a lot in south FL and look for orchids and wildflowers to photograph everywhere we go.
Evergladed Wildflowers by Roger L. Hammer is a good south FL wildflower book.
An even better book for FL orchids is Paul Martin Brown's Wild Orchids of Florida. Not only does it list the desriptions and blooming time but also the locals and frequency of the plant. In the back of the book is a wonderful section on where to find what orchids.
Mahon (Pat) is extremely knowledgeable about native Florida orchids and where and when to find them. Hope he can join us again soon from up there in Chicago land.
Doodle, do a search to find his posts re his trips to Fakahatchee - they are very informative!

I recently ordered a seedling Polyradicion lindenii. I must receive my plant in couple days, so I am very excited. By the way, was anybody successful with blooming of the "Ghost", and if so, how many years did it take from seedling till blooming stage?

Ours is still growing, but no blooms yet. It has been a few years. This year it grew the most after I moved it to a darker and more wet location in the GH. Good luck with yours.

    Cheers,
