Default Now don't jinx them buds!

These orchids are throwing out buds a bit too late in the season and I am concerned that the cold weather would cause some complications although they are in a GH.

    Caulocattleya Chantily Lace "Twinkle" HCC/AOS

Lc. Longriver Compton 'Golden Star' FCC/AOS - I give this one an A for effort

    NOID Oncidium-alliance orchid:

Laelia perrinii - this was purchased as a seedling early this year. I was not expecting it to bloom so soon. This one is interesting too, the purple tinted double-sheaths split open on their own and they themselves look like a partially opened flower.

Bringing out the "secret weapon" - just in case.
I have it calibrated to activate when the temperature get below 55F just to prevent any serious temperature dips at night. So far it has only activated once this past week.
In contrast, I have my exhaust fan set up to activate only when the temperature goes above 75F. The roof vents and louvered windows automatically start opening around 70F and are fully closed at 65F.
With this setup, I never run into the situation where the heater is running while the vents are open or exhaust fan is running.

Darn it! the Chantily Lace blasted.
I checked the GH this morning and the two spikes were naked

Even though it did not drop below 55F last night, it may have been too cold for the buds.

I was caught in a catch-22 with the Chantily Lace. If I brought it indoors while in bud, it would probably have blasted too because the house is much warmer than the GH.
I chose to let it stay in the GH and it blasted anyway.

I guess I need more bubble-wrap insulation installed on the GH to keep it warmer at night.

I probably need to give the plant a couple more seasons to adjust to the local climate.
Maybe then it would reset its blooming schedule so that it blooms when its not so cold.

John, You might need to check the temp levels at the edges, top, bottom, and center of your gh. I know it took us awhile to figure out where to keep plants during the colder months of the year. The temps will vary all around, especially if the air is not moving everywhere. We usually add in a couple of small fans to force the heated air to places where it gets a bit too cold.

Yeah, I do have three fans running on the GH 24/7.
One hung from the ceiling at the very back of the GH and pushes the air across the entire length of the GH (south to north).

Then I have two smaller fans that blow air from east to west, spaced about 5 feet apart.

I set them up during summer to prevent any build up of hot spots. Then I continue to use them now that it is getting cold, to prevent any cold spots and serious condensation.

I am still trying to learn the behavior of the caulocattleya - the name implies that it has cattleya genes, but it does not look like any cattleya I have dealt with before.

    ~John
