I was wondering myself. Here when we refer to 'red snapper' we mean the marine type of the Lutjanid family. The ones in your pictures look like 'koi' (?)

Same thing here, Yew. And I agree, they appear to be what we would call "koi".

i've never seen red ones in aquarium shops here. and tilapia at the market is just 'tilapia'? is this one raised for food, or for pets? or both? the ones for pets here are sort of plain fish, drabby blue/green.

My first thought was 'red' tilapia until I looked closely at the second picture and saw a few blackish forehead and the black speckled back which resembled 'koi'. Thanks for the info.

Here in Malaysia the 'red tilapia' are reared for food and the market. Actually they are pink (albino) rather than red. Customers at restaurants prefer pink because they look better and the ethnic Chinese here think 'pink' is a lucky colour. They all taste the same.
