Beautiful. I wish I could get one too, but salt water creatures are too expensive here. So I just keep some african cichlids as pretend salt waters.
I heard they are difficult to keep, I never knew they could be self substaining, good work!

Awesome John. My father has had aquariums ever since he could walk I think. He's recently redone his 2 meter reef aquarium. I'll try to get some pictures.

Thats what people say about orchids too. But look at us lol.
They are not difficult. The culture requirements are just different but are not much harder than freshwater aquariums.

I actually tried a couple of times to have a fully planted freshwater aquarium but could never keep the plants alive. Freshwater plant enthusiasts told me however, that they have quite the opposite experience.

So I guess its like a "rock-paper-scissors" deal too with aquariums - so much like orchids and gardening in general.

My father has recently taken out everything from his reef aquarium because fish keep on disappearing. Here's what he found to be the cause of it. Those are 1' tiles. If it bites your finger/thumb will swell quite nicely (it's like a bee it leaves the thorns inside the prey, except that it doesn't die).
The whole aquarium is 6'6". The other pics are after he'd fixed the aquarium again.

OMG, Richard! What is that thing?! It looks horrible. Is it a bristle worm? How nasty! I am glad it is out and the tank is so nice now. It is beautiful.

    Cheers,
    BD

I feel for his having had to take the tank apart, but I'm glad it was worthwhile in that he found the evildoer. That is a beautiful tank.

Yes it is definitely a bristle worm! One had bitten/stung him on the thumb before but that one was only 1 or 2", I can only imagine what damage this fella could have done.

He's pretty proud of his fishies. He used to have angelfish and took them to a 3rd place finish in the Dutch nationals. After that he changed to a reef aquarium and took 2nd only a couple of years later. Now he's sick of the judging and just does it for fun.
