    Default Seedlings month by month

A year and a half ago I crossed an Lc mini-purple with a C. Brabantiae and sent the pod off to be flasked. Got them back a few months ago and am posting monthly pictures of the trays of seedlings in my blog. I did not fuss with the deflasking and put them in sphagnum, since the last time I did this, it worked better than a fine bark mix. While they don't show much growth yet, they're healthy and when I tug on individual seedlings, clearly rooted. I think the next photo--in a week or so will show more growth.

Oh, and my blog is at IDabbles It has images of the flasks and picking them apart. There's other stuff in there besides orchids, which is probably of no interest.

    Connie,

This is not hard. They're in a plastic tray under a set of fluorescent lights. I used a big toothpick to make the cross. First one I tried resulted in seed pods. Several others since then did not, so it may have been beginner's luck. But start with something like mini-catts, since they bloom in a couple years.

Very good idea to take a monthly picture of your seedlings.
I deflasked my first seedlings recently and I agree that they sometimes don't seem to be growing anymore
and all of a sudden you see new roots or new leaves ....
it's all about patience and not looking at them every day!
    Will check out your blog!

    Hi Janet,

    Those seedlings look great.
I look forward to seeing how they develop throughout the months.

How long does it take for them to get more firmly rooted? I deflasked a week ago and they dont seem to have done anything yet!

No, nothing blooming. Here are some more images:

These are my newest seedlings from a Jiminey Cricket x Mini-purple cross. They're finally showing some sign of growth. They were very very small out of the flask.

This is a closeup of one of the Brabantiae x Mini-purple cross. It's one of the larger plants and I'd have expected it to be blooming by now. It could be that the room is colder this year, nasty old winter we're having here. But the plants look somewhat flimsier than I'd like. This one will probably have no spots. Another one about the same size has lots of spots on the leaves, so I hope the flowers on it will be spotted.

And these are the seedlings all together. You can see that some of them are smaller but there are enough that are OK.

Great looking seedlings, Janet. Both your crosses have great potential but I think you may have a winner in Mini Purple x brabantiae. Can we expect a 'blue' with good substance from this cross?
