Question From orchid seedling to adulthood

I am a novice in this field so here a few basic questions, i.e. I have been offered seedlings (clone stem) in a flask of a new Cattleya hybrid. How does one determine when they are mature enough (size/age) to remove from the flask and plant individually and does one plant them into regular potting medium at this stage? The asking price per flask is $ 30.00 whereas a small
plant costs $ 13.00 Any advice for me? Many thanks.

    Hi Michael,

Check out these orchid articles for information and photos.

The first one is about removing Brassavola cuculatta from flask and putting them into compots. Compotting Brassavola cuculatta

The second one is for deflasking Paph orchids, but gives you an idea on size and seedling medium.
    deflasking paph orchids

The third article is on cattleyas ( cattleya ), but deals with moving them from the community pot into individual containers. cattleya compot to individual pots

    Hope this information helps!

I have posted some images of cattleya seedlings month by month. I unflask into sphagnum, and it seems to be working. Check my blog at This is a mini-catt cross. Hope this helps.

This is the second time I've done this. The first time, I put half the plants in fine orchid mix and the other half in sphagnum and the sphagnum seemed to work better.

I'm trying to figure out how to put the images into an animated gif, and when I do I'll post it and see if it's accepted here.

I have some flasks ready for deflasking and I can post some pictures.
The babies are ready when they are about 2-3" high. I only use sphag for babies and just mist them every morning. Give them good air and keep them on low light (like phals). I used couple plastic 4" pots with little sphag in the bottom and... hate to say it but the babies are all dead... Since then I only use plastic trays for one use- appx 1.5" high, drill lots of holes, put the sphag and the babies on top. They are all very happy and doing great!
